Tardigrades look as though they belong in science fiction. Under a microscope, their plump bodies, short legs and tiny claws make them resemble bears wandering through a miniature forest. Yet these animals are real—and many live much closer to us than most people imagine.

This is an important distinction: finding tardigrades in a dry-looking place does not mean they live normal active lives without water. When their surroundings dry out, some species can enter a dormant survival state and wait for moisture to return.

What Do Tardigrades Eat?

Diet varies among species. Many tardigrades pierce plant or algal cells with needle-like mouthparts and consume their contents. Others feed on bacteria, fungi or microscopic organic material. Some predatory species can even eat other tiny animals.

This variety is one reason tardigrades occupy so many microscopic food webs. A patch of moss may look simple to us, but at their scale it can be a complex habitat filled with water, food and other organisms.

How Do Tardigrades Survive Drying Out?

Their most famous survival strategy is called cryptobiosis—a state in which detectable metabolic activity becomes extremely low while environmental conditions are hostile.

During drying, certain tardigrades contract into a compact form known as a tun. In this state, they lose much of their body water and activate protective biological processes that help stabilise cells and important molecules. When favourable moisture returns, a surviving tardigrade can rehydrate and become active again.

This does not make every tardigrade indestructible. Survival depends on the species, life stage, preparation time, temperature, exposure length and many other conditions. Their resilience is extraordinary, but it has limits.

Can Tardigrades Survive in Space?

Some tardigrades have survived direct exposure to the vacuum of space during scientific experiments, especially while in a dormant state. NASA has also studied tardigrades aboard the International Space Station to investigate how they respond to the combined stresses of microgravity and spaceflight.

That does not mean water bears naturally live in space or can casually crawl around there. Space experiments expose selected organisms under controlled conditions, and survival does not necessarily mean that every individual remains unharmed or can reproduce normally afterward.

For researchers, the deeper question is not simply “Can they survive?” It is how their cells protect themselves. Understanding those mechanisms may contribute to future ways of protecting biological materials—and perhaps human health—during long-duration space missions.

Are Tardigrades Immortal?

No. Active tardigrades eat, grow, reproduce and eventually die like other animals. They can also be killed by predators, unsuitable conditions or extreme exposure beyond what their protective mechanisms can tolerate.

Cryptobiosis is better understood as pressing pause during a crisis, not gaining eternal life. Even in a tun state, successful revival is never guaranteed.

It is possible to look for tardigrades with a basic microscope and a little patience:

  1. Collect a small amount of moss or lichen without damaging the surrounding habitat.
  2. Soak it in clean water for several hours.
  3. Gently squeeze or shake the sample in the water.
  4. Place a small amount of the liquid in a shallow dish or on a microscope slide.
  5. Scan slowly at low magnification for tiny, plump animals with eight short legs.

Not every sample contains tardigrades, and many other microscopic organisms may appear first. That uncertainty is part of the fun: a piece of moss can hold an ecosystem that is invisible to the unaided eye.

Why Scientists Study Tardigrades

Tardigrades give researchers a rare opportunity to study how animal cells cope with dehydration, radiation, freezing and other forms of stress. Their protective genes and proteins may offer clues for preserving cells, medicines or other biological materials under difficult conditions.

They also remind us that resilience is not always about size or strength. Sometimes it comes from slowing down, changing state and waiting until the environment becomes liveable again.
